Dividend Reinvestment Plan

Income vs. Interest Rates...

The Preferred Income Opportunity Fund pays dividends on a regular monthly basis. Despite a substantial decline in long-term interest rates over the life of the Fund, shareholders who reinvested all distributions in excess of the regular monthly dividend saw their income increase. During the briefer periods when long-term Treasury interest rates have increased, income from the Fund has shared in the increase. This is the way the Fund was designed to work; however, there have been instances when the monthly distribution has been reduced. There are factors that affect the dividends payable by the Fund, including the cost of leverage. The higher the cost of leverage, relative to the return on the portfolio, the lower the net income generated by the leverage available for distributions.

The chart is based on a hypothetical investment in 1,000 shares of the Fund at its inception. It assumes that the regular monthly distributions were taken in cash and that additional shares were acquired only by reinvesting the portion of each special year-end distribution that was above and beyond the regular monthly distribution.

Annual Breakdown of Distributions...
A portion of the income paid by the Fund is eligible for the inter-corporate Dividend Received Deduction, or DRD. For eligible corporations, the DRD portion of the income is taxed at a lower rate than Non-DRD income. As a result of the tax legislation passed in mid-2003, this portion of income may also qualify for the new 15% tax rate for individuals. The following is a historical breakdown of the distributions by category. Non-DRD income is taxed as ordinary income, and long-term capital gains are taxed at their designated rate. This breakdown only occurs at the end of each year and relies on the full year's data, so the current year cannot be estimated prior to year-end. This information is not a substitute for advice from your tax professional regarding your particular tax status.

Recent Dividend Table...
The following is a partial history of the various distributions of the Fund. An investor must be the owner of the security on the record date in order to receive the distribution. A purchase on the ex-date would generally not result in settlement prior to the record date, which means the purchaser would not receive the distribution for that month.
